The Gülen Institute began its life as a joint initiative of the Institute of Interfaith Dialog and the Graduate College of Social Work at the University of Houston . The resonances between the goals of the two institutions and their emphasis on peace and social justice have helped them start a very productive path of collaboration that already began to make its impact in the lives of many individuals. Over the last two years, the Institute initiated the Dialogue of Civilizations Platform, Graduate Scholarships, Luncheon Forums, Congressional Friendship and Dialogue Dinners, and cultural exchange and fact-finding trips to Turkey. In these programs distinguished guests from among the leaders and scholars of the Houston community and the nation were hosted to discuss the current issues of our local and global communities, which we believe helped us build a sense of devotedness to the people of Houston as well as a sense of responsibility as the citizens of the world. The Institute will continue its efforts to serve peace, social justice and social harmony through institutional and sponsored research programs, conferences, publications, grass-roots advocacy programs and youth programs. As we begin this academic year, we feel excited about the potential generated by the synergy of the people who share the values and vision of the Institute. We hope that you will also consider becoming a participant in one of these programs and help serve the goal of a more humane civilization as we venture into the second decade of the 21st century. Best regards. The Gulen Institute.
